Bone : When you get an implant on upper teeth, you have to worry about how low the maxillary sinus dips down. You have to have plenty of good quality bone to support an implant, especially on the upper because the bone there is kind of spongy. You need a sinus lift to lift the floor of the maxillary sinus and a bone graft is placed there to provide more bone for the implant to be screwed into.

Adding bone support: A sinus lift is usually done when there is insufficient bone support for the placement of implants. The sinus is actually lifted and bone is added to give additional stability for the implants. It should only be done once and is done in the area of the upper bicuspids and molars if necessary.

Implant success: The sinus often dips down in this area. The length of an implant is longer than the roots of the teeth that were there. This would result in the implant perforating the sinus membrane and extending into the sinus, and infection and implant failure results. By lifting the sinus and adding bone(graft) , a stable environment is created for your implant!
