Protein: When the blood sugar drops at night this is usually due to a high carbohydrate meal at night or imbalanced Insulin and glucagon levels - the hormones that regulate blood sugar. Insulin lowers blood sugar, while glucagon elevates the blood sugar. If we need to keep the level up at night I have the patient eat protein at night, as protein elevates glucagon.
