Mind games: There are many good mind games that force you to concentrate and focus and stay alert. Good games are available for hand helds, but even old card games like bridge can help. Playing music, painting pictures, doing photography, even knitting are other excellent mind exercises. My wife contends that cooking is an excellent mind exercise.
