A dentist: Short term, you should take an over the counter anti inflammatory and analgesic such as advil (ibuprofen). You can also alternate Ibuprofen and tylenol (acetaminophen) about every 3 hours. You have to see a dentist to determine the cause of the toothache and treat the cavity or whatever is causing the tooth to ache. A toothache means there is probably decay requiring a filling or root canal.

Remedy vs treatment: Not to be flip, a toothache usually means that you have a tooth or gum problem. While home treatments like ibuprofen, toothache ointment and mouthwash can help with the symptoms they don't treat the underlying problem. We all look for the easy and cheap answer, but a toothache will often require treatment if it persists or reoccurs.
