A Dentist: Generally dental pain arises with the inflammation from infection. This inflammatory pain responds well to the normal naids like Ibuprofen and naproxen. If you let the infection go, it can spread into the bone, sinuses or the brain. A dentist will clean out the infection and seal the source of infection if possible. You also probably need an old fashioned antibiotice like pennicilin.

Ibuprofen: As temporary relief for the toothache use Ibuprofen (motrin) but it is very important to see your dentist as soon as possible.

Best OTC is 1-2 200mg Ibuprofen. Sometimes 1 325mg Acetaminophen may be necessary to boost effectiveness. Take ONLY as per package directions, do not overdose. But pain killers only hide the spread of infection through your body from the damaged tooth. This will not self heal. What you really need is to see a Dentist yesterday rather than tomorrow. Treat the infection, not the symptom (pain).
