General anesthesia : Rest assured that general anesthesia is extremely safe when performed by an accredited practitioner in a properly accredited institution. Literally thousands of anesthetics are performed daily in the us and my patient's are often amazed at how easy the procedure/anesthetic was for them. I would encourage you to discuss you concerns with you anesthesia team/provider preoperatively.

Phone Call: There's nothing as reassuring as direct communication to ease your mind and make you feel secure. Ask your surgeon to have your anesthesia care provider give you a call. , think through a short list of questions to ask...Don't be shy. Btw, absent unusual medical conditions or untoward urgency, general anesthesia is safe, comfortable and routine.

Relax: It is normal to be nervous about your anesthesia. In fact if you weren't nervous we would be a little suspicious. The practice of anesthesia is now one of the safest medical profession. The risk of dying (the big scare) is less than one in 350, 000. I always tell my patients they are at more risk driving to the hospital to have an operation than having the actual anesthetic.
