Any time with food: Vitamin d is a fat soluble vitamin so will be more fully absorbed when taken with food that has some fat in it. The time of day does not matter. Most adults need about 5000 units a day from april to october to achieve good levels. If you spend time in the sun from 10-3 in the summer months you don't need to supplement then unless you use sunscreen.

Anytime: There are no rules about the best time of day to take supplements. Take them when they agree with you most. Many people find taking pills of any kind as part of a morning routine is easier to remember, so taking them with breakfast is a popular option.
