Not directly: Sleep disturbance is an important part of bipolar disorder, for which lithium is a longstanding and effective treatment. By evening out the mood disturbance, lithium can normalize sleep pattern. But in this way it's taken daily, and is not helpful as an "as needed" sleep medication for non-bipolar people.

Insomnia: I agree with dr. Pappas (as always). Lithium is not a sleep medication but by improving a sleep disorder it can indirectly improve sleep.
