Many causes: Poor sleep hygiene/rituals- watching tv/ doing internet stuff and other mental activities prior to sleeping, worrying & drinkingcaffeinated drink, medication side effects, working graveyard shift, anxiety, depression, medical illness among others. If it's chronic, try some over the counter meds- benadryl, (diphenhydramine) unisom, melatonin, sleepy time tea etc. If they don't work, ask your dr for prescription drug.

Multiple factors: Multiple factors can lead to insomnia: emotional, psychiatric or medical condition, unhealthy sleep habits, prescribed or abused substances, or certain physiological / biological factors or simply jetlag. Being more specific, insomnia is a response of the brain to those factors in the way that the brain cannot stop the wakefulness phase and start the sleep cycle phase.

Lack of sleep: Sleep can be interrupted due to stress, illness, noise, nasal breathing problems, viruses, side effects of medications to name a few. Sleep labs have you come in and monitor your vitals to see if you are not breathing through out the night. If you have sleep apnea , oxygen is prescribed, or surgery in the nasal passages if that is needed. Many reasons for insomnia.
