Acute inflammation: Mostly due to acute infections and acute inflammatory processes. But rare causes include leukemia (require study of peripheral blood smear and other tests by expert- pathologist).

Infection: Neutrophils (/pmns) are the marines of your white blood cells / immune system. They usually are the first out for infectious processes, particularly if they are bacterial. If it showed up on a cbc, then you are trying to get or getting over an infection.
