A member asked:

How can determine whether a gum dentist is not overtreating me to generate income?

Respect Gut Feelings: It is useful to listen to one's gut feelings, but not useful to impulsively make important decisions, especially when it comes to one's health. Gum dentists, better known as periodentists, are scarce in supply and their services usually come at a high price. Their training is far more than a general dentist. Their offices are well equipped and staffed. Ask around. Consider a second opinion.

2nd opinion: Besides asking the local community (you might want to even check yelp) , you can get a 2nd opinion from another periodontist or even from your favorite general dentist ( who even though doesnt do the same work, will have a general idea of what procedures should cost). If the work is not urgent, take your time finding a person you can trust or are comfortable with.

2nd opinion. If you are unsure of a treatment plan, seek a second opinion. Health care practitioners are, for the most part, altruistic. We do what we do to help people. To become a practitioner, either generalist or specialist, requires years of training, So if uncomfortable seek a second opinion.
