Not the cause: Treatments for discomfort of your jaw joints would be ice, advil, (ibuprofen) limiting opening, softer diet etc. Orthodontics does not cause TMJ disease. Your general dentist or TMJ specialist can be a good source of info and help.

Treat to Stability: Orthodontic treatments can cause a compromised joint problem be forcing the jaw up and back in the socket. You have to first find a stable joint position and then you will need to consider treatments to maintain this stability, but this treatment must maintain the stable joint position. You have to know where to treat before you know how to treat.

A few ideas: Same as treatment not caused by braces. . Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
