In general: Drs who perform esi's will only do 3 per year (and this is also what insurance will generally cover). These can be spaced out every couple of weeks or over several months depending on response. If someone gets 3 in a row in a short period of time and there is little or no relief, esi is/was probably not the right solution for that patient. These work best for pain from acute nerve compression.

Safety: Safe is as few injections as you need to get relief. However if you need these injections regularly, safe is a relative term but typically around 3-4 injections/year. Some patients can have as many as 3 injections per 6 months however that is not a good idea for too long.
