It is safe: If done under the usual circumstances, an epidural by a skilled and conscientious provider is safe and very effective in relieving pain. It requires monitoring by a nurse or physician and you must report any problems as soon as possible.

Yes: Epidurals are very safe for both you and the baby. That is why they are commonly used for women in labor and the medications used in them don't get to the fetus.
