Depends on dose: A few hours is usually enough.

Usually < 4 hours: If this is for labor pain: the most common epidurals rely primarily in a numbing drug like bupivacaine or ropivacaine (both work like novacaine), usually in low concentrations. After the doctor stops the infusion of this medication--usually right after delivery--it should wear off within a couple of hours and then you can walk.

Couple of hours: Assuming it was given for labor pain, most patients regain full control 2-3 hours after it was stopped, but the qualified staff ( nurse) should supervise you for the first time.
