Sedation dentistry: A person with significant fears of dental treatment might want to consider sedation for treatment. This can be accomplished with oral medication or with intravenous drugs. It is safe if performed by a trained individual. Usually, a person can lose their fears over a period of time and graduate to routine treatment without sedation, if desired.

Dental Fear Options:: Ask around to get a referral to a good dentist. First step is trust. Also, you may elect to have a premedication like valium prior your appt. You will need a driver to and from your appt. For this. Another option, usually for extensive cases, is to be put under with general anesthesia. There are risks that will be explained to you based on your medical history.

Break the cycle!: Usually fear keeps some patients away from a dentist until their dental issues become major problems requiring more invasive dental work. If all of your visits to a dentist begin with you in pain, not too much positive reinforcement there for you. My advice is to bite the bullet, explore sedation if necessary, get your oral health in order, than start fresh with regular maintenance visit.

Communication : The most important part for dental fear is to express your concerns to the treating dentist asap. You need to develop a strong and trusting relationship. Make sure all your fears and concerns are addressed and then you can proceed with treatment and even be sedated for dental procedures.
