Ask your doctor: Usually, we have patients refrain from blowing their nose for a week after septoplasty surgery. You should be able to sniff in, but not blow out. I usually have patients keep the nasal passages open with nasal saline sprays and a treatment with afrin as a "rescue" if they need serious relief. Contact the doctor who did the surgery for his specific recommendations.

After 10 days: Nasal congestion after septoplasty is generally related to internal swelling, with little if anything to "blow out". Nose blowing in the first 10 days will not clear the nose and instead may precipitate a post-operative bleed. Check with your surgeon if you feel the congestion is too uncomfortable.

Discuss with Surgeon: Nasal saline rinses are usually safe and helpful during the acute postoperative period after septoplasty. You should discuss the specifics with your surgeon.
