A member asked:

Who can see patterns when they close their eyes tightly at night?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Most people: Squeezing the eyelids tightly shut puts pressure on the eyeballs. The pressure transmits to the retina (the film layer of the eye), which responds the only way it knows how - by telling the brain that it is seeing light. This is a normal response; however, exerting this much pressure on the eye for prolonged periods can potentially lead to vision problems.
