Neurontin (gabapentin): Neurontin (gabapentin) is commonly used to treat nerve pain in peripheral neuropathy. It does not stop the progression of the damage. That requires understanding the cause of the pain and treating that cause.

Pain control: Neurontin (gabapentin) can be effective for treating nerve pain but will not stop a progressive peripheral neuropathy. Typical neuropathic pain involves burning pain and can occur when there has been damage to the nerve, spinal cord, or brain. Neurontin (gabapentin) is an anticonvulsant and can suppress abnormal neural activity.
