Ankle surgery: If the ankle joint was injured previously, or if there is severe arthritis in the joint which cause a pseudo fusion, the surgeon may need to "break" the ankle joint to either completely fuse the joint or prepare the joint for an ankle replacement. Pain relief can be obtained with opioid pain medications, rest, ice, and elevation.
