A member asked:

I have to get a part of my gums cut in between my two front teeth to get my braces. is this normal?

Sometimes: While most people do not need to have this procedure (frenectomy) done, if you have a space between your upper front teeth that you want to close, and you have heavy gum tissue between those two teeth, then yes you need to have this tissue removed in order to sucessfully close the space. If left it will push the teeth apart again once the braces are taken off.

Yes: I am assuming you ave a large space between your two front teeth and there is a frenum (piece of tissue connecting your lip with your gum) which is low. If that is the case then yes the frenum has to be cut before braces treatment.

It depends: Some people have a low muscle (frenum) attachment that may interfere with space closure in the area. Others may have a large space (diastema) that results in bunching of the tissue with space closure. Either of these may necessitate removal for an ideal orthodontic result.

Yes: This is c alled a frenectomy. Most often it is done after the teeth are inclosed or better position so that healing will tend to keep the space closed.

Certainly: A "maxillary midline frenectomy" is a common, simple procedure to remove a ankylosed or "tight" muscle attachment or frenum that may extend between the two upper front teeth. The frenum can be problematic in keeping the space (diastema) closed. If prescribed, it's a procedure that is well worth doing.

Sometimes: If you have a large gap or a low frenum (muscle attachment) it will be easier to close the space and less difficult to keep it closed if you have this procedure done.

Possibly: Sounds like you need a frenectomy. The frenum is a muscle attachment located between your 2 upper front teeth. If it's too thick or fibrous it can prevent the front teeth from coming together. It can be surgically altered to correct this problem.

Depends on the cause: Hi, it really depends on the cause and the size of the space between your upper front teeth. You may need a frenectomy, a reduction of your fibrous tissue also known as the frenum. But sometimes the space can be closed with braces unless your problem is due to a tooth size discrepancy . In that case your dentist can help you by increase the size and shape with composite bonding or veneer.

Probably: It does sound like a frenectomy is in order to close a gap between your two front teeth. It will make it easier to close the space and keep it closed after treatment.
