A member asked:

Hi, i have papanicolau test result like this: ascus with undefinied position...the doctor says thats hpv :( it made colposcopy..it is true?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Ascus means unclear: The acronym ascus indicates that the pathologist is unsure whether there is dysplasia (or hpv) or not. It basically means "i don't know, follow up and try again." patients often have additional genetic testing for hpv (in addition to the pap smear) and if that is positive, that's reasonably good evidence of hpv infection.
