If you are just drawing blood via iv, do you really need to use saline. would small amount of it ok. what affect it has on htn or diabetic patients.

Not an issue: An IV needs something infused or it will clot. Heparin (for longer periods), saline (for shorter periods) is usually used. A few ccs of saline has negligible salt in it and won't affect your bp. Same is true for diabetes. An infusion over the course of several hours would.
