Reasonable: That sounds reasonable. There may be a fracture that is difficult to diagnose. If it has not gotten better in several months i agree it may not be saveable.

Endodontist: Often times canals are missed or not completely treated. Before extraction, see a microscopic endodontist for a second opinion. They can usually solve your problem.

I'm with you: Sometimes even with the best dentistry and in the hands of the best dentist, we can't save every tooth. While it is generally better to save teeth, sometimes the best long range alternative is to remove questionable teeth earlier rather than later. One thing that i would personally not do, is wait and see what happens with an abscessed tooth. Consider getting a dental implant at some point.

2nd opinion: Have a periodoontist and endodontist evaluate your tooth for a 2nd opinion to determine if tooth needed to be extracted.

Specialist: If you've seen a periodontist and endodontist, and get a guarded or poor prognosis, you can consider extraction..But be prepared for prosthodontic treatment costs, or accept the risks and consequences for being partially edentulous for missing tooth.
