Maybe: Any smoker that coughs up blood deserves an evaluation. It may not be serious, but smoking greatly increases the chance of many cancers. Please strongly consider quitting!

Possibly: This is called hemoptysis. Spitting up blood is not normal. It may be an infection such as bronchitis or as serious as lung cancer. You should see your family doctor and be examined and get at least a chest x-ray. Even if this is negative or clears up with antibiotics if this bleeding comes back or increases be persistent and return for cat scan or further tests.
