Why ?: A well fitting mouthguard will fit snugly and not move around, but be easy enough to remove.

Yes!: What i believe you are look for is better retention. This can be achieved by having your dentist make a custom fitted night guard/day guard for you. I do not recommend the types sold otc--they lack durability and are ill fitting which can effect your bite in the long term.
