Talk to your dentist: There are many varieties of appliances available to protect you from the dental, muscular, and systemic effects of bruxism. If you are having an issue with your current appliance, speak to your dentist about alternatives. The appliance is only a way to prevent damage to the system from grinding. True "alternatives" (meaning to stop bruxism) depend on the cause.

Teeth grinding: There are some medications that have been shown to be effective at reducing teeth grinding during sleep. Also, if a person has a sleep related breathing disorder and it is treated, sleep grinding is reduced. Research has shoown that the bite relationship has little to no influence on sleep bruxism so treatments to adjust the bite for this purpose are never indicated.
