Occasionally: Occasional severe pain; take hydrocodone only occasionally. This is not a medication for prevention or cure, so there is no need in taking it except when your really need it.

Seldom: Opioids are not the first line nsaids like Naproxen etc are tried first if not helpful some nsaids may work better than other, then tramadol and acetaminophen. If opioid are used excessively often pain can be worse secondary to opioid induced hyperalgesia syndrome. You can also use Lidocaine patches or diclofenac patches to affected area.
