See Surgeon: A hernia is only a problem if the tissues that escape into it lose their blood supply, called strangulation. If your hernia can be reduced (made to disappear) by pushing on its contents, then that is normal, and routine surgical consult should be obtained. If the contents won't go down, but don't hurt, they are trapped (incarcerated). Can lead to strangulation & cause n/v/incr pain--see dr asap.

Dr. J. Roth answered

Umbilical hernia: Your symptoms sound suspicious for a symptomatic umbilical hernia. A physical examination by a hernia surgeon should be able to easily confirm the diagnosis and recommend the appropriate surgery.
