Nerve damage: The foot drop is probably due to the damage of the peroneal nerve. He needs extensive physical therapy and he may be required to wear a brace.

Drop foot: The peroneal nerve supplies motor (electricity) for certain muscles of the lower leg, as well as sensation for a part of the foot. If he had nerve damage at the time of injury the drop foot is likely because of this.
