Maybe ulnar: If it is digit 4 and 5 (ring and little finger) could be due to ulnar nerve compression at the elbow. If perhaps thumb and index, could be c-6 from neck or maybe median nerve (should include digit 3). See your doctor, an EMG test might help.

Gravity: Zebras, horses and giraffes sleep standing up. Since humans sleep lying down our hands swell at night from water that redistributes itself from our legs. That is why we get puffy eyelids too. The swelling pinches nerves.
