Speculum: The speculum has to be opened a little more to spread apart the wall of the vagina so that the cervix can be seen.

Misconception : They are completely sealed when stored. Only pre opened prior to use. The nurses open them up before usage by the doctor. Don't worry they are still sterile and give accurate results. A few minutes open to air is still hygienic.
