TMJ: Jaw popping is caused by an incoordination between the movement of the jaw and a disk of cartilage that is positioned between the lower jaw and the skull. If the disc doesn't move along with the jaw movement precisely, the jaw "pops". It is usually considered a problem only if pain is associated with it or other symptoms of TMJ dysfunction are present.
