Visit a dentist: When opening widely, the muscle system of the temporomandibular joint may be allowing you to slide off the end of the meniscus pad which allows the joint to work. Avoid opening wide and visit a qualified dentist for an evaluation.

Popping jaw: There is a cartilage disc between your jaw and your skull that allow the jaw and muscles to function smoothly and keeps the joint lubricate. The popping happens when the disc is not in the optimal position. This is very common and if there is no pain treatment may not be needed. But it is a good idea to have your dentist evaluate your jaw.
