A member asked:

My sister is taking morphine for severe hip pain but hasn't had a full night rest in about a week. what can i do to alleviate the pain for her?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Severe pain: Morphine is top notch medicine for pain, but should be managed only by a pain specialist. There are other narcotic medications that may help, if indicated. In the mean time, heat should help. Over-the-counter zostrix (capsaicin) cream may help; be careful what you touch if you apply it. Medications like Ibuprofen are still indicated. Additional nonspecialist meds that may help are Amitriptyline or gabapentin.
