Depends: Braces are quite easy to become used to. Lighter forces and smaller appliances are now commonly used, and that has a very positive effect upon the time and degree of discomfort. Children and adults vary a bit, but in general teeth start to hurt 4-6 hours after placement, reaches a peak @ approximately 72 hours and then quickly falls to almost none within a week or so. Good luck!

A couple days: Usually the pain only lasts a couple days. But every time the braces are adjusted they may be uncomfortable for a couple days. Sorry.

2-3 days is typical: Discomfort is typical with braces, but it is often alleviated with a combination of over-the-counter analgesics (like those used for a headache), warm salt water rinses, warm compresses, and softer diet for a few days. Prolonged pain requires a return visit with the orthodontist to check things out.

Depends on you: The healthier your mouth when braces go on the less the discomfort. Meme sure you're flossing every day to reduce soreness. You'll be sore a few days to a few weeks. Take 1 advil (ibuprofen) 4x/day w food or lots of liquids. Rinse 3-4x/day w 1tsp salt in 8oz warm water. Soft high-protein diet. Ask orthodontic specialist for wax. Dab orabase-b onto sore spots. Best of luck.

Bad jokes: Applying braces to your teeth is not painful. At most there will be some mild transient discomfort. Make sure your mouth is immaculately clean, and that you are flossing every day b before braces placement. Have a good breakfast, don't go in on an empty stomach. Follow orthodontist's directions for pain management after appliances are placed (advil, salt water rinses, etc.) you'll be ok.
