Depends: Braces are quite easy to become used to. Lighter forces and smaller appliances are now commonly used, and that has a very positive effect upon the time and degree of discomfort. Children and adults vary a bit, but in general teeth start to hurt 4-6 hours after placement, reaches a peak @ approximately 72 hours and then quickly falls to almost none within a week or so. Good luck!

A couple days: Usually the pain only lasts a couple days. But every time the braces are adjusted they may be uncomfortable for a couple days. Sorry.

2-3 days is typical: Discomfort is typical with braces, but it is often alleviated with a combination of over-the-counter analgesics (like those used for a headache), warm salt water rinses, warm compresses, and softer diet for a few days. Prolonged pain requires a return visit with the orthodontist to check things out.
