Tarsal tunnel: "charlie horses" are usually a muscle cramp. This can be caused by pinching a nerve in your ankle caused tarsal tunnel. Muscle spasms can also be fatigue due to poor biomechanics. I would visit your favorite podiatrist.

Limited joint motion: A "charley horse" is a spasm of a muscle which can cause loss of motion in a joint, such as in the ankle joints. There could be a problem with the ankle joint or of the surrounding capsular and ligamentous tissue of the ankle from an injury or from overuse which is providing the stimulus for the body's protective mechanism to prevent too much motion. The body will "splint" itself.

Unlikely: Charley horse is a cramping in a muscle belly. There is no muscle belly by the ankle.....
