Lace up or boot: An ankle lace up brace can give a limitless more support, an air cast offers more support and has two firm straps that run up each side of the leg and is easily removable. Don't hesitate to discuss with your md.

? lace-up: A lace-up ankle brace, which I think is what you need, is semi-rigid & made from a nylon-vinyl material. The advantage is that it can be tightened according to your comfort level & desire for more/less support, but it is more flexible than a rigid brace. Rigid braces, either stirrup or lace-up, provide greater support but limit function. Post-injury braces, such as a boot, do not allow movement.

Elizabeth -: I see you asked a lot of questions regarding ankle pain/trauma. I would not recommend horseback riding until you have a diagnosis and treatment plan for your ankle. YOu may be making it worse. The pain you express needs attention. Taking NSAIDS, pain killers and steroids is not so healthy for you….good luck
