This happens: Warm compresses and monitoring to make sure there is no secondary infection (unlikely).

Infiltration: Sounds like he has an infiltrated iv. This situation is dangerous in two scenarios. One- if the infiltrated substance is toxic to the tissues (chemotherapy or certain antibiotics) or there is compartment syndrome. This is where tissues will die if the pressure is high enough. These situations need immediate medical attention. Otherwise - elevation and warm compresses. See a physician.
