Rest: Avoid anti-inflamatories like Motrin or aleve if there is a sprain (with instability). Wrap the knee, ice and elevate periodically. Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain should be sufficient for the pain. Any linament (greasy and warming) can stimulate blood flow for healing. See a sports doctor if the fluid and pain persist for 1 week. You will play again when healed and strong.

See below: How did you injure? Is there swelling? Sensation of a "pop" or "giveaway"? Does the knee feel unstable? Painful to bear weight? These are signs of more significant injury. Immediately following injury rest, ice, compression ( simple ace wrap). Some controversy about use of non steroidal anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, naproxen) initially , after 48 hours go ahead. Salon pas good topical cream.
