Soon: Knee sprain is a catch all term for a lot of knee injuries. Assuming the sprain is minor (Grade 1MCL strain), you can return to athletics when you are doing all of your athletic activities without pain or swelling. It is advisable to do a gradual return to play to test your knee out. If you progress through all activities pain free, it is usually safe to return to full participation.
