Difficult To Say: Without knowing additional information, it would be difficult to give a for sure answer. Very often, a positive culture of the site of infection, an elevated WBC count, or fever could be signs or indicators of infection. Remember, antibiotics are only effective for a sensitive bacteria and are totally ineffective for viral infections.

Bacterial infections: Antibiotics are useful to treat bacterial infections. Frequently, but not always the symptoms include fever and pain (ear, throat, chest, etc). And pus. Since it is difficult to differentiate virus from bacteria, many doctors will culture the wound, phlegm or area in an attempt to grow bacteria. This helps prevent unnecessary use of antibiotics for viral infections.
