Read below: The right thing to do would be to use a custom nightguard that is made by a dentist that has TMJ experience. Using an over the counter mouthguard will most likely worsen the TMJ condition. Using a nightguard is good, and please do use one. But do not use one that is not custom fitted.

Custom mg advised: A custom mouthpiece is usually recommended for those who suffer tmj/tmd. A non-custom one (drug store, sporting goods store, online) may be too thick and send the muscles into more spasms and cause the jaw/mandible to displace.

Good thing: If you have TMD and you clench/grind at night, a mouth guard can help. Work with a TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.

Recommended: However, the night guard is chosen by dentists to address tooth wear, soreness, and mobility that occur as a result of night clenching or grinding of the teeth.

Night guard: Doesn't cure joint dysfunction, but does reduce symptom severity. Night guard often good 1st step, depending on etiology. OTC products can actually do harm. Custom Occlusal Orthotic, made & adjusted by Dentist, is best option.
