A member asked:

How long does one needs to take the medication for ocd? and would you consider escitalopram a good option? and can it cause stomach upset

Depends: The best treatment for ocd is the combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt) and medication. Lexapro is one of the ssris (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) which has been shown to be helpful in the treatment of ocd. The real question about the amount of time one should be on the medication is whether the ocd persists. Do you still have ocd? The ssris can cause an upset stomach.

Indefinitely: The meds only work while they are being taken. Cbt (cognitive-behavioral therapy) can help ocd, and the benefit lasts after treatment has been completed. Though combination treatment (meds + therapy) is usually best, there is some evidence to suggest that meds might interfere with cbt when treating ocd. Meds+support/education can work, and Lexapro (escitalopram) is a good option, usually well tolerated.
