Mandible: Your lower jaw, the one that moves when you open your mouth is your mandible. Your upper jaw that is part of you skull is your maxilla. Genetics determines what position they are in and how large they are. Early orthodontic examination can predict if you need corrective treatment so that you don't have your facial proportions out of normal. Jay leno for example, has a very large mandible.

Support: The lower jaw (mandible) supports the teeth, tongue and lower face. if your lower jaw is deficient, you would have a "weak jaw".
