Old and new advice: It's been known for a century that purine-rich foods, such as liver and kidneys, raise uric acid levels, which worsens gout. Recent studies have suggested that meats are bad for gout, and dairy (skimmed-dairy is safest for cholesterol) is good. Vitamin c also lowers uric acid (note that over 1000mg of vitamin c may cause kidney stones).

No beer, less fat: Gout patients should not drink beer, wine is fine. Low-fat dairy is good for gout. Avoiding a lot of red meat and shellfish is good. I recommend a low fat, heart healthy diet high in vegetables.

What are the four stages of gout?

4 stages of gout: The first stage is high uric acid levels in blood without a gout attack. The 2nd stage, acute gout, is gout flares separated by asymptomatic periods. If treated effectively, disease progression stops and no more flares. If untreated, acute gout can progress to 3rd stage: chronic gout, with constant flares. The 4th & final stage is terminal gout with joint destruction and disability. Get treated!

Could you tell me what are foods ok to eat for someone who has gout ?

Vegetarian diet: Gout is associated with the bodies inability to eliminate uric acid. Foods high in purines interfere with this process. Foods to limit are meat, shell fish , high fatty foods and alcohol especially beer.
