Old and new advice: It's been known for a century that purine-rich foods, such as liver and kidneys, raise uric acid levels, which worsens gout. Recent studies have suggested that meats are bad for gout, and dairy (skimmed-dairy is safest for cholesterol) is good. Vitamin c also lowers uric acid (note that over 1000mg of vitamin c may cause kidney stones).

No beer, less fat: Gout patients should not drink beer, wine is fine. Low-fat dairy is good for gout. Avoiding a lot of red meat and shellfish is good. I recommend a low fat, heart healthy diet high in vegetables.
