Reassuring: In general, a macrofollicular pattern is a benign finding. However, the false negative rate (the test says no cancer when cancer is actually present)for an fna is about 5%, so the area that was biopsied will usually be followed by your doctor with ultrasound for growth or change.

Ask your doctor.: Epithelial cells in macrofollicular patterns are usually benign thyroid cells and are usually not associated with a premalignant or malignant process. This is good news. Ask the doctor who ordered the fna to help you interpret the report and to answer your questions. That person will be able to give you information in the context of your personal clinical setting.
