Fat removal by laser: Lasers can be used to "melt" fat. The technique is to insert a small laser under the skin of the abdomen which then is directed at surrounding fat tissue. The fat cells and other tissues are destroyed. The fat liquefies, which can be sucked out, and scar tissue forms that pulls in on the skin. Slim lipo is one of a variety of lasers available, each using slightly different wavelengths.

Any energy applied to fat causes cells to break down and to burst, liquefying it and making it easier to extract (suction). As well, many fat cells not actually killed or suctioned are terminally injured and lead to further tissue reduction. SLIM (selective laser induced melting) is one way and has proved to be a valuable tool for melting the fat. Many using one or the other may claim "popularity" of any system, or value of the "number of wavelengths" the units employ. But those who have used multiple lipo lasers and vasers have found SLIM gave far better results than others.

SLIMlipo utilizes 2 wavelengths 924nm & 980nm. Studies done reveal that 924 nm used by SLIMlipo is the peak absorption of heating adipose tissue . Dr Brooke Steckel of Harvard medical has a nice you tube demonstration station of this phenomenon

Another form of lipo: Traditional liposuction uses a cannula to physically break up some of the fatty tissue and then suck it out. Newer technologies have been developed including laser assisted (slim lipo and smart lipo) and ultrasound assisted (vaser). Besides breaking down the fat cells, these modalities also have a thermal effect on the skin which may cause some tightening of the skin as an added benefit.

Slim Lipo: Is a state-of-the-art diode laser which is delivered to the subcutaneous fat with tiny fiberoptics via small punctures which facilitates liposuction ( done right afterwards), causes impressive skin tightening, and decreases postop swelling. It's done under local, markedly decreasing cost.877drsisto(377 4786 for more details).

Laser liposuction: Slim lipo is a form of laser assisted liposuction. A laser is used to melt the fat, provide skin contracture, and reduce bruising. Smartlipo is a similar procedure which uses three laser wavelengths.

Laser lipo: Just one of the many varieties of laser liposuction. Most people dont realise that laser lipo just incorporates laser with traditional lipo as an extra step in the process.

Laser Lipolysis: Selective laser induced melting - slim liposuction is a technique utilizing laser technology to help liquify the fat which is then aspirated. The candidates for liposuction are those with fatty deposits or lipodystrophy that did not improve with weight loss or exercise. In this subset of patients the results tend to be excellent.

Are there big risks to liposuction?

Depends: It depends on your overall health, and how much liposuction is being done. In general, if you are healthy and do not undergo large volume liposuction, it is a relatively safe procedure. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks. I recommend discussing your personal situation with a board certified plastic surgeon who could explain the risks and come up with the best treatment plan for you.

Are there liposuction complications that happen often?

Dr. Jon Perlman
Plastic Surgery 48 years experience
Not if done properly: Complications from liposuction are very rare if patient and doctor selection are made carefully. For example a patient with loose skin after weight loss is not a very good candidate for lipo whereas someone with good skin elasticity and localized extra fat is. An unskilled surgeon or a poor candidate for the procedure can cause bad results and even complications. Choose wisely!

Permanent removal: The fat that is removed is permanently gone. The remaining fat cells (not all are removed in any area) may still get larger with weight gain, but the proportions should be much better.

What is the earliest stage to have liposuction?

Dr. Richard Tholen

Age 18, if needed: If you are at or close to ideal weight, have localized excess fatty tissues, and have good overlying skin tone, you are a good candidate to see an abps-certified plastic surgeon experienced in the various liposuction techniques that might be appropriate for you. Liposuction is not a weight-loss technique.
