Not much: Most of the cough medicines for children less than 2 years old have been banned by the fda because they've never been shown to help and some children died of overdoses. You can try kid's vick's vapo rub, suctioning his nose, humidifying the air. If he has a fever (over 100.4 degrees) bring him to the doctor for additional testing.

Comfort/ observation: The average 5mo with fever & cough has a mild self limited illness.He will key off your body language to remain either calm or afraid. Nasal wash with saline will reduce the congestion & cough.Using a humidifier helps if the heat is on . If you observe a decline in his activity/fluid intake etc a call to the service is in order.
