Autosuggestion: Hypnosis involves focused concentration and autosuggestion to create one of a number of different altered states of consciousness. For the purposes of self-healing and personal growth, we aim for a very specific state of consciousness, one of serenity, acceptance, and exquisite presence. This state can be used to give yourself affirmations that act as positive post-hypnotic suggestions.

Heightened focus: Hypnosis is a heightened state of focus which allows the practitioner to control his autonomic responses. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis- the therapist is but a coach or guide.

Open to suggestion: Hypnosis is a state, often accompanied by relaxation, in which you focus your awareness and are open to suggestion. Hypnosis is always self-hypnosis - the hypnotist simply guides you in finding this state. It is not something the hypnotist "induces", and you can not be forced to do something you do not want to do through hypnosis. Different people also have varying susceptibility to hypnosis.

Altered state: Hypnosis is an altered state of deep relaxation and focused concentration where one is more open to suggestion. Self-hypnosis is the same state just self-induced as opposed to being induced by a hypnotist. Both can be used for therapeutic purposes.
